Two Cents Worth – Home Maintenance Tips to Save You Money

Roof Maintenance Tip #7

Roof maintenance can save you big-time money. Here are some items to check and maintain every spring and summer.

Roof Boots

These usually last 10 years. They are often the culprit whenever a leak leads to seeing water circles in your ceiling. If you check and maintain your roof boots, you’ll avoid expensive roof and ceiling water damage repair costs.

Gutters

Be proactive and cut down trees that encroach on your house to prevent leaves from filling up your gutters and clogging them every time there’s a storm. When your gutters get filled, you increase mosquitoes and prevent your home from properly diverting water from the house. If water isn’t guided away from the house, your home’s roofing, siding, and other material will degrade from water damage.

Checking and clearing your gutters at least every season is an important way to reduce mold from forming on your drain system. If any debris is left for too long, it will break that ugly green-to-black sticky substance. This makes your house look dingy and can clog the water flow.

Another issue with clogged gutters is that it becomes heavy. This pulls on your fascia and soffits. Heavy gutters will start to tear away from the roof line and create more damage.

Shingles

Check for loose shingles and replace any that have come off.

The roof generally lasts 20 years. This is dependent upon the materials that were installed. When building your new home, ask us to review the different roof material options available.
