Two Cents Worth – Summer Home Maintenance Checklist

Two Cents Worth brings you this cheap and easy home maintenance checklist to save you lots of time and money. We offer you the full, professional home tips as well as the cheap version. We know lots of homeowners that have saved thousands of dollars just by being reminded of these quick and easy tips. Here’s RG Builders two cents worth checklist for this summer:

BBQ

An important aspect to living in the South – FOOD! Especially BBQ’d food. Check out your current BBQ situation to determine if now is the time to invest in building a built-in patio BBQ kitchenette. An outdoor built-in BBQ is a great way to attract friends and family over for some fun.

The cheap solution? Upgrade that old nasty BBQ that you bought 10 years ago. Go out when it’s Father’s Day and get the shiny new BBQ that you’ve been drooling over. If your the Dad, buy it for yourself as a Father’s Day gift. You deserve it and your family will love you for it every time you cook on it.

De-Humidifier

If you haven’t already, now’s the time to get your HVAC maintenance check done. While you have a professional HVAC professional check your unit(s) be sure to ask them about your de-humidifier. If your HVAC unit doesn’t have this equipped now might be the time to upgrade your unit or add that feature to it.

If you want a cheep temporary solution for this then buy a stand alone de-humidified that automatically starts up when the humidity gets to a specified point in your home.

Here in the south you do not want humidity inside your home. It can ruin your duct work and cause unhealthy mold.

Be sure to check your crawl space or basement for any walls that need to be cleaned off and painted. There is mold deterrent paint available that will help reduce mold damage.

Garage Doors

Check the temperature in your garage to help assess if it is insulated enough. Your garage doors should keep most of the heat out of your home. If they’re not, you could be throwing out hundreds of dollars each month for your electric bill. On a hot day, walk into your garage. It should be nice and cool. If it’s not, it may be time to get new garage doors installed.

Windows

Windows can be another home feature that is wasting energy. You could save yourself thousands of dollars each year by replacing your windows. Windows are similar to the roof. They typically last a maximum time of twenty years depending on the manufacturer and installation. Replacing your windows is pricey but you will save on your monthly electric bill and it will improve the value of your home.

Attic

Summer is a great time to have a professional check your attic. Attic’s can be a huge fire hazard. You want to make sure that your attic doesn’t get too heated and that the electrical is not exposed or malfunctioning. Be sure to check that there are no roof leaks while inspecting the attic. If there is a leak that can cause rotting wood as well as causing a spark if water heats an electrical line or outlet.

Bug Off

One unavoidable “feature” about the south are the ginormous bugs. If you don’t already have a screened in porch, patio or sunroom now is the time to get ‘er done! Schedule your appointment with RG Builders to get a free quote. This creates a whole new space for you and your family to enjoy all summer long.

The two cents worth version? Plant garlic and lavender around your house. These plants ward off mosquitoes naturally. The bug zappers don’t work. Bug spray works until you sweat it off. Citronella candles? Forget about it.
